When it comes to relocating your home from one state to another state in India, a significant question pops up as how to transfer your two-wheelers vehicle from one state to another? To move your registered vehicle from one state to another could be a tedious task, if you are unaware of its process and rules. Also, driving your vehicle in another state sometimes could even get into trouble and penalised as per the traffic rules. Since, the traffic rules may vary from one state Regional Transport Office (RTO) to another, hence, it is recommended that you should keep the below given points in mind to get an overview of the process and relocate your vehicle easily:

1. Duration of Relocation

There is no need to relocate the two-wheeler, if you are shifting to another state for a period of less than a year only and you are about to come back again to the state where your vehicle was registered. In such cases, you can freely drive in another state. But, if you are planning to move to another state for more than a year, then you are required to attain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the RTO and apply for fresh registration in the RTO of the new state.

2. Documents Required for Registration

You need to acquire the following documents required for re-registration of vehicle in another state as per the law:

  1. Regional Transport Office (RTO) form 27
  2. Regional Transport Office (RTO) form 28
  3. Vehicles registration certificate
  4. Valid insurance policy of the vehicle
  5. Valid Pollution Under Control Certificate of the vehicle

3. No Objection Certificate (NOC) From Traffic Police

In addition to seeking the NOC from RTO, it is needed to be obtained from the traffic police as well. This is required to ensure that there lies no pending challans to be paid from your end. Hence, you will be entitled to clear all the pending dues before moving from one RTO to another. After this only, you can get the NOC from the traffic police.

4. No Objection Certificate (NOC) From Police Station

The No Objection Certificate (NOC) is also required to be obtained from the police station of your locality. This is needed to confirm as there are no open cases are in progress or registered involving your two-wheeler vehicle, which is to be re-registered. This step can be considered as a security measure to keep a check against illegal activities.

5. The Process of Re-Registration

After you have collected all the required NOCs, you can easily apply for the registration of your vehicle in the new RTO. In simple terms, if you are shifting from Pune to Noida, then you are required to collect all the NOCs from Pune and submit them at the Noida RTO to register your vehicle there. After this, you will have to proceed as per the registration procedure of Noidas RTO. You must have the knowledge as to which RTO to contact for the registration process.

6. Cancellation of the No Objection Certificate (NOC)

If due to any circumstance, your plan to relocate changes or get cancelled, then you will be required to cancel your NOC, if already obtained from your existing states RTO. Since the process of relocation was already initiated, therefore to put it back, you will be required to get a Non-Utilization Certificate (NUC) from the RTO of the new city, where you were supposed to shift. For instance, you will have to get an NUC from Noidas RTO to cancel the NOC of Punes RTO.

Two-Wheeler Insurance Policy

Although the insurance plan tends to cover your vehicle across the nation, it is still suggested that you should convey your insurer about your relocation. Your insurance provider takes your location into consideration while computing the premium amount for your two-wheeler, hence, informing them about your decision of relocation or staying back in your state.

Process to Get Refund of Road Tax

Just like income tax returns, you can also raise a request for tax refunds. Lets understand this concept with an instance, suppose you are presently living in Bangalore, where the road tax is high, and choose to move to Bhopal, where the road tax is low, then, in such a case, you can apply for road tax refunds as the taxes paid by you in Bangalore are more than the taxes in Bhopal. In such types of situations, you will be entitled to receive the refunds.

Given below are the documents to be submitted to apply for the refund from the RTO where your vehicle was registered earlier:

  • Application requesting a refund of road tax.

  • The copy of RC with new registration number.
  • The copy of RC with previous registration number.

For instance, if you are shifting from Bangalore to Bhopal, you will have to submit the above-mentioned documents along with an application to seek refund of road tax (form 16) to the RTO in Bangalore, after which, they will authenticate the new registration number from the RTO in Bhopal.
